This is Todd. Todd's taking us to the fish.

MARTIN:

Hi, Todd. Where are we going?

TODD:

We're going about a hundred miles northwest.

約100マイル北西へ行きます。

MARTIN:

Are there fish there?

そこには魚がいるのですか？

TODD:

I hope so.

MARTIN:

How far do you go on fishing trips?

どのくらい遠くまで漁に出かけるのですか？

TODD:

Usually not far.

普段はそんなに遠くありません。

MARTIN:

What do you mean not far?

遠くないというのはどういう意味ですか？

ALLEN:

Let's say two hundred miles.

そうですね、200マイルぐらいでしょうか。

TODD:

We've gone much farther. We go to Alaska sometimes. We almost went to Russia once.

もっと遠くに行ったことがあります。時にはアラスカへ行きます。一度はもう少しでロシアというところまで行きました。

MARTIN:

Why do you go so far?

どうしてそんなに遠くへ行くのですか？

ALLEN:

We can't find fish. We keep going until we find some. Let's talk to Bruce. He's working on the net.

魚が見つからないからです。魚を見つけるまで、どこまでも行きます。ブルースに話しかけてみましょう。彼は網の仕事をしています。

BRUCE:

Are you enjoying the trip, Martin.

MARTIN:

Yes, so far. It's a beautiful day.

ALLEN:

Come on. The weather is perfect. It's not going to storm.

I hope not. How long do you stay out?

BRUCE:

Two days and two nights.

ALLEN:

On a long trip we might stay five days. We can't make much money then.

長い船旅では5日ほどになることも。そんな時はあまり儲かりません。

MARTIN:

Why?

ALLEN:

We can't carry enough fish. Short trips are better.

充分な量の魚を積むことができないのです。短い船旅の方がいいのです。

BRUCE:

When we catch a lot of fish.

たくさんの魚を捕まえた時はね。

MARTIN:

You have a small crew. What happens when someone is missing?

少ない乗組員ですが、誰かがいないときにはどうするのですか？

BRUCE:

Do you mean when someone is sick?

誰かが病気の時という意味ですか？

MARTIN:

Yes, sick. Or some other problem.

はい、病気です。または何か他の問題で。

ALLEN:

Sometimes I find another crew member. Sometimes we troll.

別の乗組員を探すこともあれば、流し釣りをすることもあります。

MARTIN:

What does that mean?

それはどういう意味ですか？

BRUCE:

We use lines. We don't use the nets. The nets take more men.

釣糸を使います。網は使いません。網は多くの人手が必要です。

MARTIN:

Can you tell me about that?

それについて教えてください。

BRUCE:

We put several lines at the back of the boat. The boat pulls the lines through the water.

船の後ろに何本かの釣糸をつけます。船が水中を釣糸を引っ張ってゆきます。

ALLEN:

Each line has several hooks. One or two men can watch several lines. We catch the fish one by one.

それぞれの糸にはいくつかの針がついています。１人か２人で数本の釣糸を見張ることができます。魚を一匹ずつ捕らえるのです。

MARTIN:

What kind of fish do you catch?

どんな魚を捕まえますか？

ALLEN:

We like to catch salmon and tuna. Sometimes we catch other fish, but they don't bring us much money.

鮭やマグロを捕りたいです。他の魚を捕まえることもあります。でもそれらはあまりお金になりません。

MARTIN:

So salmon and tuna bring the most profit?

ということは鮭とマグロが一番儲かるのですね？

ALLEN:

Yes. They're profitable. We always sell those to my sister-in-law.

BRUCE:

We keep the profit in the family.

身内に利益をとどめてい るんです。

MARTIN:

Allen, is your brother a fisherman?

ALLEN:

No, he's like our father. He doesn't like fish.

いいえ、彼は父に似ています。魚が好きではありません。

MARTIN:

But his wife does?

でも奥さんは魚が好きなのですか？

BRUCE:

She likes fish, but she doesn't like fishing.

彼女は魚が好きです。でも彼女は漁が好きではありません。

MARTIN:

Do you like fishing?

BRUCE:

It's OK. I really like the ocean. I love the water, the boat, the air. Fishing is the work that lets me be on the boat.

ALLEN:

At last, here's Chris.

What do you mean, at last?

We are getting hungry.
