MARTIN:

I don't think I will, Allen. I like boats and I like the ocean. Of course, I've never been on the Pacific Ocean before.

ALLEN:

Do you like fishing?

釣りは好きですか？

MARTIN:

Yes. I've fished mostly in lakes and streams. I don't know much about commercial fishing.

ALLEN:

I guess I don't either. We don't make much money.

MARTIN:

I want to know about the business. First let's talk about the boat. How big is the boat?

ALLEN:

It's too small. I bought it in Texas. It was built for the Gulf of Mexico.

これは小さすぎます。テキサスで買いました。メキシコ湾で使うための作られたものです。

MARTIN:

How big is it, Allen?

アレン、船はどのくらいの大きさですか？

ALLEN:

It's sixty feet long. That's big for the Gulf but very small for a Pacific Ocean boat.

60フィートの長さです。メキシコ湾で使うには大きいですが太平洋で使う船としてはとても小さなものです。

MARTIN:

Why did you buy a small boat?

なぜ小さな船を買ったのですか？

ALLEN:

I wanted a boat that my sons and I could operate. I have three sons. They're my crew. Anyway I used all the money I could get. I couldn't buy a bigger boat.

私の息子たちや私が操作できる船がほしかったのです。私は3人の息子がいます。彼らが乗組員です。いずれにしても得られたお金すべてをつぎ込みました。もっと大きな船は買えなかったのです。

MARTIN:

Is your crew all family?

ALLEN:

Yes. Sometimes a friend of one of my sons comes along as a crew member. It's a family business.

そうです。時々1人、息子の友達が乗組員の一員として一緒に来ます。家族経営です。

MARTIN:

How did you become a fisherman?

どのようにして漁師になったのですか？

ALLEN:

My grandfather was a fisherman. He lived in Massachusetts and fished in the Atlantic Ocean. My father hated fish. He moved out here to Washington state to get away from fishing.

私の父が漁師でした。父はマサチューセッツに住んで大西洋で漁をしていました。父は魚が大嫌いでした。父は漁業から逃れるためにここワシントン州に移住したのです。

MARTIN:

How do you catch your fish?

あなたはどのように魚を捕まえるのですか？

ALLEN:

This boat is a trawler.

この船はトロール船です。

MARTIN:

What does that mean?

どういう意味ですか？

ALLEN:

We catch the fish in nets. That's one of the nets over there.

網で魚を捕らえます。あそこにあるのが網のひとつです。

MARTIN:

Let's look at it.

見てみましょう。

ALLEN:

See. It's cone shaped. We put the net in the water behind the boat. The fish go in the large end. They swim into the small end and can't get out.

見てください。円錐形をしています。船の後方で網を水中に入れます。魚は大きい先端から入ります。狭い端の方へ泳いで入ってゆき出られなくなります｡

MARTIN:

What happens then?

それでどうなるのですか？

ALLEN:

They're caught.

魚は捕らえられます。

MARTIN:

I mean what happens after they're caught?

魚は捕まった後にどうなるのかということをお訊きしたいのですが？

ALLEN:

The net and the fish are pulled from the water. The fish are put in this large tank until we get back to the harbor.

網と魚は海から引き上げられます。港に戻るまで魚はこの大きなタンクに入れられます。

MARTIN:

What happens to your fish then?

それであなたの魚はどうなるのですか？

ALLEN:

Most of them go to the wholesalers.

ほとんどは卸売り業者のところへ行きます。

MARTIN:

Tell me about that.

それについて話してください。

ALLEN:

Some of the special fish go to another family business. My brother's wife has a place in the fish market. She sells fish in the market and to one of the expensive restaurants in Seattle.

特別な魚のいくらかは家族が経営しているほかの商売にまわされます。私の兄(弟)の妻は魚市場に売り場を持っています。彼女は魚を市場で売ったり、シアトルの高級レストランのひとつに売ったりします。

MARTIN:

What happens to the other fish?

ALLEN:

I sell them to the fish wholesalers. My catch isn't very big, so one wholesaler usually buys everything. He sells them to people in the market.

私が魚の卸売り業者へ売ります。私の漁獲量はそんなに多くありません。だからひとつの業者が通常全部を買い取ります。業者は市場でそれを売ります。

MARTIN:

Tell me about the crew. I know they're your sons. Who's the boss?

ALLEN:

I am of course. I'm the father.

MARTIN:

What do they do?

ALLEN:

Everything! I supervise, but we all do everything. We run the boat. We repair the boat. We pull in the nets. We repair the nets. It's too much for four people. But we are hard workers.
